What comes to mind when someone mentions a darkfield microscope? A darkfield microscope can be either a low power stereo microscope or a high power compound light microscope. Both are fitted with a special item called a darkfield condenser. In both high power and low power magnification, the darkfield condenser is used to reflect the light around the specimen so it tends to shine from the sides rather than being transmitted straight through the specimen. If transmitted directly through the specimen, the illumination method is called transmitted illumination in brightfield microscopy. While this is the most common microscopy method, and is great for imaging most things, it does lack some capability that only darkfield microscopy can give. A low power microscope fitted with a darkfield condenser and jewelry clip is often called a gemological microscope. This is the type you see in the shopping malls at the jeweler stores for looking at gemstones such as diamonds. For the high power magnification version, a special application known as darkfield live blood cell analysis is often used. This involves a natural health practitioner (typically not a medical doctor) taking a blood sample and examining it under darkfield microscopy. If you need either the gemological type or the live blood cell analysis type of darkfield microscope system, please contact us today. We can provide this equipment at a competitive price.
